I'll admit it...

I'm and NPR junkie. My daily escape is to listen to "All Things Considered" and make dinner. Hooray for my under-the-counter CD player/radio in the kitchen!

Last night as I was making dinner I heard the teaser for "Radio West" (local Utah program) that was rebroadcasting the morning's show at 7pm. Here's what it said:

Earlier this month at the LDS Church's General Conference, the head of the Relief Society Julie B. Beck praised the power in motherhood. She encouraged women not to postpone having children, and equated nurturing with homemaking. Her words re-ignited a controversy about the role of Mormon women, and within hours, LDS blogs were inundated with responses. On RadioWest, Doug talks to LDS women about Beck's remarks and what those say about women's position in the LDS Church and culture.

I HAD to listen (as I folded laundry), and thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised. I have to give Doug Fabrizio credit for going to the source. He spoke with active LDS women (rather than anti- or former-Mormons with a GIANT chip on their shoulder), and the overall opinion was positive. If you'd like to hear the conversation, click here to listen to the podcast.

As for me, I have to say I was surprised to find out that there WAS controversy about the talk. I was uplifted, encouraged, and excited that Sister Beck was so straightforward, honest and willing to set the standard high. I'm trying to be a "mother who knows."

I cannot tell you how much I loved this post. When I heard about the controversy I was truly shocked. I couldn't figure it out for the life of me. What greater compliment could I receive than that I am a "mother who knows." Boy, do I have a long way to go, but what a fabulous ride!

I was surprised to hear that there had been some controversy over this talk also. Sadly, we are constantly told that being "just a mom" is something we are settling for. We need more strong women being brave enough to acknowledge that we are building something greater at home than we could dream of building in the workforce. We are creating strong, vibrant warriors who will hopefully to be strong enough to stand strong and immovable themselves...I, too have a long way to go, but I'm not doing it alone!

Hooray for NPR! (Ron loves it!) I have to totally give them kudos for, like you said, "going to the source." That is so rare these days, especially with Mitt in the picture. How refreshing that they didn't just want to put it in a bad light from the get-go. I listened to the conversation you linked to, and was also pleasantly surprised. I would've typically already had my guard up.

Hey, it was so great to hear from you, by the way!! I'm so glad to see you guys are doing so well! I heard from you and Angie at the same time, and memories of "Trail of Dreams" came flooding back! :o)Good times, good times...

Please keep popping in! It's so fun to keep up with each other. (BTW - your kids are getting so big, and they are sooo cute!!)

I was also completely shocked when I heard there was controversy over this talk. I was with two of my best friends when I watched it for the first time, and we all just said, "that was awesome!". Way overdue. Thanks for sharing the radio show, surprisingly well done, I thought. I used to listen to NPR all time! We love "All Things Considered" too. But, I think our favorite was "Car Talk" on Saturday mornings. Very obnoxious, but they really are hilarious!

I LOVED this talk. Maybe I'll check out the podcast - although I'm not sure I want to know about the controversy. I thought it spoke directly to me and reaffirmed what I hope to be doing with my life.

Stumbled on your blog and not sure how but I am so grateful that there were others positive about the talk. I loved it myself and am always trying to show my kids I know. Thanks for encouraging it.
