Happy Birthday to Me!

It's my party....and I'm excited to shout my good news:

I'm pregnant!

We are beyond thrilled about this long-prayed-for baby, due in January 2009. It is fun that our kids are old enough to understand the concept of a new baby and are anxiously looking forward to their new sibling 'after Christmas.'

Some local reaction:

K: "I think it is a baby grill and we should name her Pretty Pony!"
D: "We won't know if it is a boy baby or a girl baby until it comes out. How does it come out, Mom?"

....the OTHER side of having older siblings. Any good suggestions for dealing with awkward questions from a 5-year-old? I'd love a good book on this subject! :)

Oh Adri - I'm tearing up as I read. I am SOOOOOOOO happy for you. I hope you are feeling well. This baby is so blessed to come to such a great family.

The older the kids, the cooler the questions. My boys were about your kids' ages when I was pregnant with Jessica. They seem to be more interested about how baby comes OUT than how it got IN - which is easier to answer. I called it a baby tunnel (because they couldn't comprehend a canal). When it's time, the tunnel opens and baby "slides" out. Wish it was as easy as it sounds.

My boys were also concerned with a baby in my tummy or stomach. Can you imagine the spaghetti covered baby they pictured in their heads? I assured them that mommies have a special place called a womb where babies can grow. It's very warm there and cushioned.

Jessica just asked me the other night if I had another baby in my tummy. I had to explain how the special cushioning that keeps babies warm sometimes sticks around for a long time after the baby comes out.

Best wishes! We love BOTH of our January babies. Being "Big" pregnant is wonderful in winter.

We are SOOOO excited for you all!! Such a happy, happy birthday for you. I have thought about you today and never imagined when I got on your blog, you would share such incredible news. When I got past the scary weeks of being pregnant with Ben and realized we were really going to get one after all that we had been through, I just couldn't believe it. Oh, I am just so happy for you.

And if you want my advice (our kids were quite old and had some interesting questions), I told them, "We go to the doctor because he knows just how to get out a baby. That is why we go to him." And then I was ready to explain more as questions were asked. I didn't want to pretend it away, but I didn't want to share too much if that is not what they were asking. They seemed completely satisfied with that and haven't asked anymore. I'm still waiting though, as I'm sure they will soon enough.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! And CONGRATULATIONS!!

Yay! Kate and Dallin will be such fantastic older siblings! What exciting news for all of you! I have no doubt you'll be a fantastic mother of three! PS I think Brad Wilcox just might have a book about talking to your young kids about stuff like that. Let me know if you find one you like!

Hooray! Congratulations, Adri! I am so excited for your family! I hope you are feeling well.

As for the questions: it works differently for everyone, but what worked for me was giving minimal but accurate answers. Sometimes it's enough to satisfy the curiousity, and then you know they don't really need to know more yet. But one answer results in another question, then you know you'll need to give a little more info. But always keep it real, even w/ 3-yr-old answers. I SWEAR, REAL STORY: Ron was 13-years-old when he found out you CAN'T get pregnant from kissing!!! How embarrassing! :o)

Happy Birthday AND Congratulations!! Hooray for a new Murdock!

I agree with Deana, only give 'em what they ask for! At least while your little. However, Quinton asked really in depth questions at 4 when I was pregnant with Avery. Finally after lots of questions and a little uncertainty about mom's welfare, I finally told him that the doctor has a baby taking out machine. That satisfied him!

Congrats! You sure have cute kids. I'm sure this one will be just as cute.

Just a suggestion....If Pretty Pony is the girl name, maybe Skeletor for a boy?

ADRI....We are soooo excited for you guys! Congratulations. We can't wait to meet our new little nephew or niece! I loved the book "A Child is Born" you would need to be careful with some of the pictures with little ones but most of the rest of the book is beautiful! Hugs to you all!

I am beyond thrilled for you! Happy happy birthday, girl! Tyler asked me when I was pregnant with Aliza how the baby got out and I asked him what he meant. He said, "I mean, does he use his hands?" I said, "yes." He was content with that answer! Make sure you know what they are asking before you answer it!!!

YEAHHHHHHHH! congrats all!

As far as questions, my boys are pretty interested in the workings of girls and boys and I've just answered their questions frankly (including a kid-friendly but accurate description of where the babies come out). That way there's no mystery that they're trying to solve behind my back. Open and honest....it's worked for us. AND I usually end the discussion with a hopeful 'Aren't we lucky' statement surrounding whatever discussion we've had (having babies, having penises, whatever....).

Oh, Ade, what wonderful news. I'm so happy for you and Chad! Congrats and Happy Birthday. When I was pregnant with Harry, Will would explain to Audrey that "the baby gets bigger and bigger and then just pops out." It is actually pretty true so I just went with it. I don't know what he is picturing but as long as he is satisfied, we won't go into further detail, right!
